Mahindra Thar SUV Clocks 2 Lakh Unit Sales Milestone in India
From April to October this year, the 3-door Mahindra Thar and its bigger 5-door version sold 42,726 units, reflecting a 19.6% year-on-year growth (YoY) over the 35,723 units sold in the same period the previous year.
Since its launch on October 2, 2020, the Mahindra Thar SUV has crossed the significant milestone of 2 lakh units sold in India. According to SIAM wholesales data and Mahindra’s sales figures, the three-door Thar, now accompanied by the Thar Roxx, achieved total sales of 2.07 lakh units as of last month.
From April to October this year, the 3-door Thar and its bigger 5-door version sold 42,726 units, reflecting a 19.6% year-on-year growth (YoY) over the 35,723 units sold in the same period the previous year. This accounts for 65% of the Thar’s total FY2024 sales of 65,246 units. The introduction of the Thar Roxx has driven demand further, attracting a wider customer base by offering a more versatile and practical option compared to the original 3-door model.
Mahindra Thar: Engine Details
The Thar 4x2 is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which delivers 117bhp and 300Nm of peak torque. This variant is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. The 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine from the Thar 4x4 is also offered, paired with a six-speed torque converter automatic, producing 150bhp and 320Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, the 4x4 version offers two engine options: a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol mill (150bhp/300Nm) and a 2.2-litre diesel mill (130bhp/300Nm). In contrast to the 2WD models, the 4x4 variants come with both six-speed manual and automatic transmission options. The 4x4 also features a manual-shift transfer case, with some variants offering a manual-locking differential.
Mahindra Thar: Features
The off-roader from Mahindra boasts several notable features, including a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, halogen headlights with LED DRLs, steering-mounted controls, electrically adjustable air conditioning, removable roof panels, and cruise control.
In terms of safety, the car is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, hill descent control, rear parking sensors, and a front seat belt reminder for enhanced protection.

The Thar is available in India with prices ranging from Rs 11.35 lakh to Rs 17.60 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom figures. Its main competitors are the Force Gurkha and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The SUV also serves as an alternative to models like the Mahindra Bolero, Hyundai Creta, and the Mahindra Scorpio N.
