EICMA 2021: Updated Suzuki Katana revealed

The Suzuki has updated the Katana with a heavily reworked engine and more features. The motorcycle will be launched in the international markets early next year, but the odds of the Katana coming to India are slim.

Suzuki has revealed the updated 2022 Katana at EICMA 2021. The changes include a reworked power plant and the addition of a few features. Cosmetically, the new Katana looks identical to the outgoing model; however, Suzuki has offered new paint schemes with the updated motorcycle – Metallic Matte Stellar Blue and Solid Iron Grey. The updated Suzuki Katana only gets gold-highlighted USD forks and painted alloy wheels.

The 2022 Katana continues with Suzuki’s litre-class K5 motor, which also powers the 2021 GSX-S1000. The 999cc in-line four-cylinder engine of the Suzuki Katana gets new intake and exhaust camshafts and valve springs. The air intake box is now larger, and the exhaust has been updated to a 4-2-1 layout. This in turn should allow the engine to breathe better and improve its thermal efficiency. Suzuki claims that the tweaks to the engine help it offer a wider power band throughout the rev-range. The motorcycle has also gained up to 2bhp, which means that it now offers up to 150bhp – the peak power arrives at 11,000rpm.

The engine also has new (smaller) 40mm electronic throttle bodies, which could offer a crisper throttle response than the outgoing model. It goes without saying that the motorcycle now features a ride-by-wire system, which has allowed Suzuki to incorporate some more features into the motorcycle.

The motorcycle continues with a six-speed gearbox, but this time it gets a recalibrated slipper clutch. The gearbox also features a two-way quick-shifter.  

Other features include three riding modes, a start-stop system, and a low RPM assist. The low RPM assist essentially raises the engine speed when the clutch is released, which prevents the stalling of the motorcycle. The cycle parts such as the suspension components and braking hardware stay the same.

In the premium motorcycle segment, Suzuki two-wheelers India currently has the new Hayabusa and the BS6 V-Strom 650XT on sale. The Japanese motorcycle maker is yet to bring in the BS6 updated version of the middle-weight GSX-S750. Suzuki two-wheeler India is also absent in the litre-class segment.
