BMW’s origins can be traced back to two men, namely, Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto. In 1916, Otto’s company, Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik, had merged into Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke AG (BFW) as per the German government’s order. Elsewhere, in 1917, the Rapp Motorenwerke company became Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) GmbH, which was later converted into an AG (a public limited company) in 1918.
